Put your judging hats on, folks, because I’ve decided that I’m going to start making my monthly goals public for the world to see:
June Goal 1: Keep food & drink spending to $300. I’ve gotten close most months, but have let little impulse buys throw me off (See goal 4).
June Goal 2: Pay $2100 toward my student loans. This is $1025 from each paycheck toward my high-interest rate loan and the minimum payment toward my low-interest loan.
June Goal 3: Run 80 miles. Look! It’s a non-financial goal, which I’ll track using the Nike Running+ app.
June Goal 4: Turn impulse buying into impulse student loan payments. This is an idea I’ve thought about turning into reality for some time now; let me break out of italics for one second.
I am no stranger to impulse buying. Whether among the aisles at the grocery store, walking past display windows around New York, or reading emails touting another big online sale, it is easy to end up with something I don’t really need by making a purchase I’ll regret later on. Besides filling up my tiny apartment with tchotchkes I’ll never throw away, the impulse buying hurts my long-term financial goals too.
And so, what I’ll do this month is track every chance I have to make an impulse buy using the Piggie app (Thank you to Twittress @vanessapage for the recommendation) and as motivation, I’ll send the amounts I don’t spend toward paying down my student loan debt. This will be a fun experiment.
June Goal 5: Become less terrible at blogging. Yes, this is harder to measure, but I’m hoping the result will be obvious; I’ve really dragged my feet on improving the blog since moving to this new domain. Let’s say the goal is to have a solid logo, and commenting and sharing that work, by the end of the month.
And that’s that. We’ll see if public shaming helps me reach these. Let’s say that I’ll start counting today — June 4 — so it makes sticking to the budget easier, but makes the 80 miles tougher. Anything else I should have added? Do any of these sound unrealistic? How do these match up with your own goals for June?
